Merthyr Farm

Small, friendly, family run and family orientated campsite. Quiet, peaceful location, outstanding panoramic views, spectacular sunsets and generous, grassy leveled pitches.

Campers have been coming up to Merthyr for over 35 years. Some of our guests have been coming since the early days - returning over the years with children, then grandchildren, as we have all got older! Many firm friendships have been made, sorrows shared and happy events celebrated.

Merthyr is a 350 acre improved hill farm that has been in the Roberts’ family since 1926. The current farmhouse was built in the 1700’s and there is evidence of an earlier dwelling just below the cow shed. However, the archaeology in the immediate area, in the form of standing stones, hut circles, ring cairns and stone circles, points to there having been occupation here for much, much longer. The modern translation of the name ‘Merthyr’ is ‘martyr’ but a traditional translation is ‘resting place of the saint’ as in Merthyr Tydfil,- but which saint is associated with Merthyr farm has been lost in the mists of time.

The land is mainly to grass with a herd of 30 pedigree Welsh Black cows plus Gwynfor the bull and a flock of 520 breeding ewes - mainly Welsh Mountain, Hill Speckled Face and Welsh Mules. Lambing is usually between February and the end of April whilst calving is during the spring and summer. Also around the farm you will meet Susan, a very, very old pony who moved here, with Lizzie, from Orkney a couple of years ago. Susan refuses to act her age and loves carrots and orange peel.
